ASK BRIANNA: Hair Coloring Tips
Hey Brianna,
It’s your friend Julie’s younger sister. Have a question regarding self hair coloring. Do you have any tips on what is the best brand to use so hair won’t look frazzled & will come out even. I am a brunette like you & don’t vary my color much. Love your website & videos!!!
Hi Jana,
Thanks for asking! I am a makeup professional and I dabble in hair sometimes, however, I wanted to give you a honest and professional answer. I knew this was a question for a hair stylist, so my dear friend Monica Dobbs, was happy to volunteer to help me answer your questions.
She suggests finding a reasonably priced salon and telling the hairstylist- upfront- what your hair budget is. Over the counter boxed color can really damage your hair. Monica says, “Any hairstylist should be able work within your budget. Sure, you may not be coming back every 6-8 weeks, but sometimes, you dont have to. This all depends, of course, on your hair goals, texture of your hair, and your original hair color.” In the long run, you will be more happy with the outcome of your hair because it will be healthy and not damaged.
If you keep buying a box from the drugstore, you end up damaging your hair even more. The formula made in permanent box color is actually formulated to keep damaging your hair so you “think” you have to keep coming back for more. The peroxide keeps eating up your hair leaving you that dry , frizzy look. If you have to buy box color, Monica suggests aiming for a semi-permanent, or colors that are all organic- less damaging in the long run. Use a deep conditioner, on a regular basis to help keep the frizz down, and to look and feel healthy!
So, Jana, I hope this helps! I have to tell you, from my personal experiences, I have been more happy with my hair when I go to the Aveda Salon and get it done. I go about every 12 weeks. Sure, I could go every 6 weeks, but I spread it out a bit so I dont break my bank, AND my hair is so much more healthy.
